About Us
Meghalaya
Abode of Clouds
Meghalaya is a state in northeast India. Meghalaya (Abode of Clouds in Sanskrit) is one of the seven North-Eastern states of India. Famous for its high rainfall, subtropical forests and biodiversity.
Meghalaya is predominantly a farmer's homeland. The vast countryside is dotted with hills and valleys that are painted with golden paddy fields and vegetable terrace gardens. Each home in the city or village finds in fit a backyard where all manner of fruits and vegetables are grown. Not a season goes by when the land is not farmed. Even in the harsh winter months, the hills are lined with cabbage and potato farms, as far as the eye can see.
What we offer within the Meghalayan collective store and the pages of this catalogue is but a silver lining of our home; in shades of green, orange and blues - the colours of our land.
Our Story
Meghalaya initiative
A Govt of Meghalaya's initiative towards collective marketing of products of small-scale farmers.
Meghalaya is nurturing various collectives in the form of cooperatives, SHGS, producer groups and other participatory grass root societies engaged in value chain development of niche products such as turmeric, ginger, fresh fruits, honey and spices. These are known for its low chemical pesticide and fertiliser content.
These collectives are being supported in mission mode through grants, interest free loans, capacity building exercises and bank linkages and helping them in aggregation, marketing, setting up of primary processing centres, accessing wider markets and realizing better prices
To bring out the communitarian ethos spanning different products, geography and institutions under a common umbrella, it was felt that a brand was needed. And thus, 'Meghalaya Collectives'.
MBMA, as the owner of 'Meghalaya Collectives' will integrate the efforts of all the various stakeholders and centralize the efforts to promote the brand and the products.

Testimonials

“Laitkynsew Tomato is cherished for its distinct taste and has attracted attention beyond the village, with increasing number of visitors keen to purchase directly from the village. We’re ready to seize this opportunity.”
L. Khongwir
Secretary of Laitkynsew Village, East Khasi Hills

“Our tomatoes are big and very delicious, distinct due to the organic farming methods practiced by the famers, including use of cow dung at regular intervals. This has enabled the farmers to command higher price for the produce.”

“Tomato farming is crucial for our community’s economy. Majority of the farmers from the village grow tomatoes but on small scale. Our traditional practices include using bamboo baskets, locally called ‘Kriah’, that helps not only in transporting but also in keeping the laitkynsew tomatoes fresh, which otherwise is delicate and have a short shelf life.”
